The Standard Oil Trust was formed in 1863 by John D. Rockefeller. He built up the company through 1868 to become the largest oil refinery firm in the world. In 1870, the company was renamed Standard Oil Company, after which Rockefeller decided to buy up all the other competition and form them into one large company. Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey v. United States was a Supreme Court case that tested the strength of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The most contentious business case at the time to reach the Supreme Court saw the United States government take on the countries largest corporation (Standard Oil) and John D. Rockefeller, the countries wealthiest businessman. Another predecessor was Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony), established by the trust in 1882. Both companies became independent in 1911 when the U.S. Supreme Court dissolved the Standard Oil combine, but the two merged in 1931 to form Socony-Vacuum Corporation. In 1926 the New Jersey company introduced the trade name Esso (representing the abbreviation for Standard Oil, “S.O.”) and applied it to many of its products and companies. Other Standard Oil companies, however, later contested the name in the courts and succeeded in barring its use in several states. Seventeen miles east of Chicago, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey began construction on a massive refinery complex in May 1889. Using advanced refining processes introduced by John D.
