Mass shooting charts

Wednesday's mass shooting in Florida shocked and horrified people across America. But many have pointed out a depressing reality — shootings are quickly forgotten until the next one occurs. A hand-written flow chart shared by the left-leaning political page Resonant Muse perfectly captures this emotion.

The following chart visualizes each mass shooting in terms of deaths and injuries. As Mother Jones ‘ Mark Follman notes, the actual number of fatalities is probably higher. A 2013 federal mandate authorized by President Obama lowered the definition of a mass shooting down from four victims to three, which led to more of these shootings being tracked, but there may be earlier ones that are not included. A heavily armed young man opened fire on terrified students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Wednesday, leaving a death toll of 17. It is the third mass shooting in the past four months in the United States. This pattern has led Statistic | As of August, there were eight mass shootings in the United States in 2019. This is compared to one mass shooting in 1982, one in 2000, and 12 mass shootings in 2018. The United States sees the most school shootings in the world. A few of the European countries with a higher mass shooting rate per capita than the United States include Russia, Norway, France, Switzerland and Finland. It certainly seems that the United States has the highest mass shootings rate of all the land, but this has been proven untrue. As you will see by exploring the spreadsheet and charts below in 'Number of Shootings at America's Schools Through American History' whatever definition one uses to define a mass school shooting the numbers go up at a very similar rate.
